Caring for a concrete worktop
Our worktops are sealed with SureCrete XS-327, a food-safe polyurethane that sits on the surface of the concrete. Day to day, wipe it with warm water and a little washing-up liquid. It doesn't need routine resealing, and a damaged patch can be repaired in place.
What is the worktop sealed with?
SureCrete XS-327 is a two-part, water-based polyurethane. It forms a thin film over the concrete rather than soaking into it, so water beads on the surface instead of being absorbed.
It is UV stable, low in solvents (25 g/L VOC) and food safe once fully cured.
How should I clean it?
Warm water, a soft cloth and a drop of washing-up liquid is all it needs.
Avoid scouring pads, cream cleaners and powder cleansers. They won't stain the concrete, but they dull the seal over time.
What will stain it?
In the manufacturer's tests, these were left on the seal for 24 hours with no effect: coffee, cola, grape juice, ketchup, bleach, 10% acetic acid (stronger than household vinegar) and ammonia.
Mustard can leave a temporary mark. Wipe spills up when you see them, as you would on any worktop.
Can I put hot pans on it?
Use a trivet. The seal is rated to 149°C, and a pan straight off the hob or out of the oven is often hotter than that.
Can I chop directly on it?
Use a chopping board. The seal resists scratching, but a knife can cut through it, and a cut is where water and oil reach the concrete underneath.
Does it need resealing?
No, not as routine. The seal is made to be repaired in patches: the area is lightly sanded and a fresh coat bonds to it. In the first year, on a piece we made and fitted, if the seal fails we repair or reapply it. After that, a worn or cut patch can be touched up in place at our standard rate, without refinishing the whole top.
When can we use it after it's fitted?
The seal takes light use 24 hours after its final coat, and is fully cured and food safe after seven days. Where we finish a worktop on site, we'll tell you the date it's ready for full use.
